Finding a good garage in the UK

A good local garage is worth keeping. It is the one that tells you a repair can wait, remembers what it did last year, prices a job before starting it and calls before doing anything extra. Most independents are small businesses that survive on repeat customers, which is exactly why the good ones are good, and why reviews from people who have used them for years tell you more than any price list.

The everyday work is the MOT and the service. An MOT is a legal safety inspection for cars over three years old, with a maximum fee set nationally, and any garage can be an approved test station; a service is maintenance to the manufacturer's schedule, and here the choice is between the main dealer and an independent. Under UK rules a car under warranty can be serviced at any garage that follows the schedule and uses parts of the right quality, so an independent does not invalidate it, provided the service is recorded properly. Beyond that sit diagnostics for warning lights, brakes, clutches, tyres, exhausts, air conditioning and the rest.

Two other kinds of business are worth knowing about. Mobile mechanics come to your home or workplace for servicing and many repairs, which suits people without a garage nearby or a car that will not start. Body shops handle accident damage, dents, scratches and paint, often working with your insurer. There is no licence for a mechanic, so look for reviews, IMI qualifications, membership of a scheme such as the Motor Ombudsman's code, and the DVSA approval sign for MOTs. The listings here show each garage's reviews, opening hours and contact details, so you can compare who is nearby and who local drivers go back to.

What garages do

MOT and servicing: the annual MOT test, interim and full services to the manufacturer's schedule, oil and filters, brake fluid, cambelts and the checks that keep a warranty valid.

Repairs and diagnostics: reading fault codes for warning lights, brakes, clutches and gearboxes, suspension and steering, exhausts, batteries and alternators, cooling systems, and air conditioning re-gas and repair.

Tyres and wheels: fitting, balancing, puncture repair, tracking and wheel alignment, and seasonal tyres.

Bodywork: dent removal, scratch and scuff repair, panel replacement, paint and accident repair through body shops, including insurance work and alloy wheel refurbishment.

Mobile mechanics: servicing, brakes, diagnostics, batteries and many repairs done at your home or workplace, and pre-purchase inspections of a car you are thinking of buying.

Before you book a garage

  • Ask for a price, or at least an hourly rate and a diagnostic fee, before any work starts, and ask them to call before doing anything beyond it.
  • For an MOT, look for the blue three-triangles DVSA sign; only approved test stations can issue a certificate.
  • For a car under warranty, ask that the service follows the manufacturer's schedule with parts of equivalent quality and is recorded, so the warranty stays valid.
  • Read recent reviews from regular customers, and look for mentions of honesty about what did not need doing.
  • Ask whether old parts are kept for you to see, and what guarantee comes with repairs.
  • For bodywork, get two or three quotes, and check whether the shop is approved by your insurer if you are claiming.

What garage work costs in the UK

The MOT fee for a car is capped by law at £54.85, and many garages charge less. As a rough guide, an interim service costs somewhere between £100 and £200 and a full service £150 to £300 at an independent, with main dealers higher. Labour rates run from about £50 to £120 an hour depending on the region and the garage, with diagnostics often charged as a fixed fee. Mobile mechanics tend to be a little cheaper than a garage for the same work because there is no premises to pay for.

Repair costs depend on the part and the car, so the reliable approach is a written or emailed quote before the work, and a call if anything changes. A garage that explains what it found and what can wait is worth more than the cheapest hourly rate.

How do I find a good garage near me?+

Start with the garages listed for your town and read reviews from people who have gone back more than once; that repeat custom is the best sign. Ring for a price on the job you have, and notice whether they ask sensible questions about the car. A garage that tells you something can wait, and shows you the old part, is one to keep.

How much does an MOT cost?+

The maximum fee for a car MOT is set by the DVSA at £54.85, and garages often charge less, especially when the MOT is booked with a service. The test itself is a pass or fail inspection of safety and emissions; any repairs needed to pass are separate, and you are free to have them done elsewhere and return for a retest.

Can I use an independent garage without losing my warranty?+

Yes. Under UK and retained EU rules, a manufacturer cannot require servicing at a main dealer to keep the warranty. The service must follow the manufacturer's schedule, use parts of equivalent quality, and be recorded in the service book or digital record. A good independent knows this and will do exactly that; keep the invoices.

What is the difference between a garage and a mobile mechanic?+

A mobile mechanic brings the tools to your home or workplace and can do servicing, brakes, batteries, diagnostics and many repairs on the driveway. Jobs that need a ramp, heavy equipment or a lot of time, such as clutches, gearboxes and most bodywork, still need a garage. For convenience and a car that will not start, mobile is ideal; for bigger work, a garage.

Do I need a body shop or a garage for a dent or scratch?+

A body shop. Most general garages do mechanical work and send bodywork to a specialist. For small dents, paintless dent removal and mobile scratch repair can be done at home for a modest price; for anything involving paint, panels or accident damage, a body shop with a paint booth is the right place, and your insurer may have approved repairers if you are claiming.

What should I do when a warning light comes on?+

Check the handbook for what the light means. A red light generally means stop safely and call for help or a mechanic; an amber one usually means get it checked soon. A garage or mobile mechanic can read the fault code in minutes, which tells them where to look; ask for the code and the explanation, and a price before any repair.

What MOT and other services does a garage offer?+

Most general garages cover MOT testing, servicing to the manufacturer's schedule, brakes, tyres, batteries, exhausts, clutches, diagnostics and general repairs, and many book the MOT alongside a service for one visit and a lower combined price. Bodywork, specialist diagnostics for some marques, and gearbox or engine rebuilds are often sent to a specialist, so it is worth asking what a particular garage does itself before booking.
