Finding a good marketing agency in the UK

A marketing agency's job is to bring you customers, and everything else — the logo, the posts, the ads, the emails, the website — is a means to that. For a small business the useful agencies are the ones who ask about your margins and your best customers before they talk about channels, who can say which of the many things they could do will actually move enquiries for a business like yours, and who report in numbers you care about: leads, bookings, sales, cost per customer.

The trade splits by specialism. Digital marketing agencies run search advertising (Google Ads), paid social, SEO and email; social media agencies create and manage content and community on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and LinkedIn; branding and creative agencies handle identity, design and campaigns; full-service agencies do all of it, at a price. Most work on a monthly retainer with a minimum term, some on projects, and the good ones will start with a small paid piece of work rather than a twelve-month contract.

What to watch for is any agency that owns your accounts — your Google Ads, your Meta ads, your social pages — rather than being given access to yours, and any that reports impressions and followers when you asked for customers. The listings here show each agency's reviews, specialisms, examples of work and contact details, so you can see who is nearby, who works with businesses your size, and whose clients can point to what changed.

What marketing agencies do

Paid advertising: Google Ads for people searching for what you sell, and paid social on Meta, TikTok and LinkedIn, with the tracking to show what each pound returned.

Social media: content planning, photography and video, posting and community management on the platforms your customers use, and influencer work where it fits.

Search and content: SEO, blog and guide content, local search and Google Business Profile, and email newsletters that keep past customers coming back.

Brand and creative: naming, logos and identity, print and signage, brochures and packaging, and campaign creative across channels.

Strategy and reporting: a marketing plan with budgets by channel, monthly reporting against leads and sales, and the analytics setup that makes reporting honest.

Before you hire a marketing agency

  • Be clear what you want — more enquiries, a launch, a rebrand — and what a customer is worth to you; a good agency will ask.
  • Ask for two or three case studies from businesses your size, with the numbers, and to speak to one client.
  • Ask who will actually do the work day to day, and how much of their time you are buying.
  • Get the retainer or project price, the minimum term, the notice period and what is included in writing, with ad spend shown separately.
  • Confirm every account — ads, analytics, social — is in your name with the agency given access, so you keep it all if you part.
  • Agree what will be reported monthly, in leads and sales rather than likes, and how tracking will be set up to make that possible.

What marketing agencies cost in the UK

As a rough guide, a small-business retainer with a local agency runs £750 to £2,500 a month for a defined scope such as social media management or Google Ads management, £2,500 to £6,000 for several channels, and more for full-service agencies and in London; ad spend is on top and paid to the platforms. Google Ads management is often charged at 10 to 20 per cent of spend with a minimum fee. Project work — a brand identity, a campaign — runs £2,000 to £15,000 depending on scope. Freelance marketers charge £30 to £75 an hour or £300 to £600 a day.

Cheap social media packages that post stock content three times a week rarely bring customers; a smaller budget spent on Google Ads or a proper Google Business Profile often does more for a local trade. Ask the agency what they would do with your budget and why.

How do I find a good marketing agency near me?+

Look at the agencies listed for your town, read the case studies and reviews for businesses your size, and ask two to propose against the same brief and budget. Judge on whether they talk about your customers and your numbers rather than their channels, and check the accounts will be yours.

How much does a marketing agency cost?+

Typically £750 to £2,500 a month for a single defined service such as social media or Google Ads management, £2,500 to £6,000 for several channels, with ad spend on top. Projects like a brand identity run £2,000 to £15,000, and freelancers £300 to £600 a day. Ask what is included and the minimum term.

What is the difference between a marketing agency and a digital marketing agency?+

A digital marketing agency works online — search and social advertising, SEO, email, content — while a marketing agency may also cover branding, print, PR and events. For most small businesses the digital channels are where customers are found, and many local agencies do both under either name. Ask what they actually do day to day.

Is social media marketing worth it for a small business?+

For some, very: cafés, salons, shops, venues and anyone whose product photographs well. For a plumber or an accountant, Google search and reviews usually bring more work than posting. A good agency will tell you which applies rather than sell you the package they have.

How do I know if a marketing agency is working?+

By the numbers you agreed at the start: enquiries, bookings, sales and cost per customer, tracked through analytics, call tracking and your own records, and reported monthly. Impressions, reach and followers are not results. Give paid advertising two or three months and SEO six before judging.

Should I sign a long contract with an agency?+

Not at first. A three-month trial or a defined project shows whether the agency delivers before you commit; twelve-month contracts protect the agency, not you. Whatever the term, make sure every account is in your name and you can take it all with you.
