Terms of Use

These terms cover using The Business Listing, whether you are searching the directory or listing a business on it. Please read them before you add a listing — you are asked to agree to them when you do.

Who we are

The Business Listing is a free UK-wide business directory operated by [Registered company name, company number and registered address].

You can reach us at sales@thebusinesslisting.co.uk or through our contact page.

What we provide

A directory that lists UK businesses and helps people find them by trade and by town. Listing a business is free, and remains free for as long as the listing exists.

We do not act for either side of any transaction. We are not a party to anything you agree with a business you find here, and we do not vet the quality of the work businesses do.

Your account

You need an account to add or manage a listing. Keep your password to yourself — anything done through your account is treated as done by you.

Tell us promptly if you think someone else has access to it.

Listing a business

You may only list a business you own or are authorised to represent. You confirm that when you submit a listing.

The details you provide must be accurate and kept up to date. A working website is required for every listing.

Every new listing is reviewed before it goes live. We may reject, edit, suspend or remove any listing — for example if it is inaccurate, duplicated, misleading, or not a genuine UK business.

The packages

Lifetime is free forever and goes live within 30 days of being approved.

Partner is free forever and goes live within 24 hours. It requires our badge on your website's homepage. We email you the badge code, and if the badge is not found within 5 days the account is moved to the Lifetime package and you are told.

Featured costs £2.99 per month, including VAT, for each location you choose to feature. Adding locations is always free on every package — you only pay for the ones you feature.

Nationwide is Featured on every UK town's page, built for you, for £58.80 per month, including VAT.

Paying for Featured

Featured is a monthly subscription taken by Stripe, our payment processor, or a yearly one at £32.27 a year including VAT (10% less than paying monthly). Your card details go directly to Stripe and are never stored on our servers.

You can cancel at any time from your dashboard. Cancelling stops future payments and the listing returns to the free Lifetime package at the end of the period already paid for.

If a payment fails or a subscription is cancelled, the listing is moved back to Lifetime automatically.

If the price changes, existing subscribers keep the rate they signed up at.

If you are a consumer rather than a business, you may have a legal right to cancel within 14 days of subscribing. Contact us and we will handle it.

Articles, links and paid ads

A sponsored article, or a paid link in one of our guides, is a one-off payment of the price shown for its trade, including VAT, taken by Stripe when you submit it. If our editors do not publish it, the payment is refunded in full. Articles and links on gambling, CBD, adult content, crypto, payday loans or essay writing are priced by quote once we have read them, and paid for then.

A published article or link stays up with no renewal fee. We may still remove one that breaks these terms or the law, or whose destination stops working or becomes harmful.

Paid Ads run on credit you buy in advance. Ad prices and credit are shown excluding VAT, which is added when you buy credit. Unspent credit stays on your account.

Guest articles

Articles in News & guides bylined "Guest contributor" are written by people outside our team — businesses, agencies and freelance writers. Some are commissioned or paid for, and may include a link to the contributor's website or their client's.

Our editors read every guest article before it is published, and we do not publish one we believe to be misleading. A guest article is the contributor's view, not ours.

Content you give us

You keep ownership of everything you upload — your description, photos and logo. You give us permission to show it on the directory and in listings of your business.

You must have the right to use what you upload. Do not upload anything unlawful, misleading, offensive, or belonging to someone else.

Each location you list has its own page, so each needs its own description. We ask for that because near-identical pages are hidden by search engines, which helps nobody.

Reviews

Reviews are moderated before they appear. We may decline to publish a review, and we may remove one later.

Business owners can reply publicly to reviews of their own listing.

Do not write reviews of your own business, or of a competitor.

Acceptable use

Do not use the site unlawfully, or in a way that could damage, disable or overburden it.

Do not scrape, crawl or bulk-extract listing data, or use automated means to access the site beyond ordinary search-engine indexing.

Do not attempt to bypass our review process, gain unauthorised access to any account, or interfere with the security of the site.

We may suspend or close any account, and remove any listing, for a breach of these terms.

Other people's websites

Listings link to businesses' own websites. We are not responsible for the content, availability or practices of any site we link to, and linking to it is not an endorsement.

Our intellectual property

The Business Listing name, logo, design and the software behind the site belong to us or our licensors. The compiled directory as a whole is also ours.

This does not affect ownership of the content you upload, covered above. Do not copy, scrape or reuse our site design, software or compiled directory without our permission.

Availability and rankings

We work hard to keep the site fast and available, but we cannot promise it will never be unavailable, including where that is caused by something beyond our reasonable control.

We cannot promise any particular position in our results, or in any search engine. Featured listings appear above free ones within our own directory — that is the only placement we control or guarantee.

Our responsibility to you

Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot be limited by law.

Otherwise, we are not liable for lost profits, lost business or lost data, and our total liability to a paying customer is limited to the amount paid in the twelve months before the claim. For anyone using the site without paying us, our total liability is limited to £100.

The site and the listings on it are provided "as is". We do not vet or guarantee the accuracy of what a business tells us about itself, and using any information you find here to contact or deal with a business is at your own risk.

If something goes wrong because of you

If we suffer a loss, or face a claim from someone else, because you broke these terms, misused the site, or gave us something you had no right to give us, you agree to cover our reasonable costs of dealing with it.

Changes and closing an account

We may update these terms. If a change materially affects you, we will tell you before it takes effect.

You can close your account and remove your listings at any time from your dashboard, or by contacting us.

If part of these terms cannot be enforced

If a court decides part of these terms is unenforceable, the rest still stands.

These terms, together with anything they refer to, are the whole agreement between us about using the site. If we do not act on a breach straight away, we can still act on it later.

We may transfer our rights and obligations under these terms — for example if the business is sold or reorganised. You may not transfer yours without our agreement.

Law

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and disputes are subject to the courts of England and Wales.
