Allianz Commercial has appointed Emma Woolley to a newly created senior role combining responsibility for its global specialty business and UK commercial operations. Subject to regulatory approval, Woolley will join the Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty SE board and report to chief executive Thomas Lillelund, taking up the role by February 2027 at the latest.
Key takeaways
- Woolley will become president, global specialty and UK region.
- The role brings global specialty lines and UK commercial operations under one leader.
- Her appointment remains subject to regulatory approval and the conclusion of her current commitments.
- Woolley brings nearly 30 years of experience across underwriting, broking, governance and executive leadership.
The combined remit places one executive at the intersection of Allianz Commercial’s international specialty ambitions and its UK market, a significant centre for complex and cross-border insurance business.
A newly combined leadership structure
Woolley will oversee Allianz Commercial’s global specialty lines while leading its UK markets. She will work alongside chief underwriting officer Vanessa Maxwell Neverton and chief distribution officer Jeremy Sharpe, while collaborating with regional presidents to support the expansion of the specialty portfolio internationally.
The structure reflects the importance of the UK to Allianz Commercial. In addition to being one of the insurer’s key commercial territories, the country is home to Lloyd’s and the London Market, which play a central role in placing large and specialist risks worldwide.
Experience across specialty insurance
Woolley joins from Talbot Underwriting, AIG’s Lloyd’s specialty platform, where she is chief executive. She previously served as AIG’s global head of marine and spent almost six years at Lancashire Group, ultimately becoming chief executive of Lancashire Syndicates.
Earlier roles included senior positions at Canopius Group, Swiss Re and BMS Group. Her career has covered underwriting, compliance, governance, broking and executive management, giving her experience across both the technical and commercial sides of specialty insurance.
What the move could mean for brokers
The appointment may provide brokers with a clearer senior decision-maker for complex risks involving Allianz Commercial’s UK business and international specialty operations. Marine, professional lines, financial risks and construction are among the areas where cross-border placements and London-based market expertise are particularly relevant.
A unified leadership structure could also help align underwriting appetite and regional priorities on large or internationally traded accounts. Woolley’s experience running Lloyd’s platforms at Talbot and Lancashire Syndicates gives her direct familiarity with the market through which many such risks are placed.
Appointment forms part of wider leadership development
Lillelund said Woolley’s leadership record, underwriting expertise and understanding of the UK market would support Allianz Commercial’s ambition to be a trusted commercial insurer.
The appointment also follows broader leadership development at the business since Lillelund took over as chief executive in early 2025. He joined Allianz after leading AIG’s Europe, Middle East and Africa operations and previously held senior roles at Aspen Re, Gen Re and Swiss Re.
