Honda has received two Red Dot Design Award 2026 honours, recognising both a radical electric motorcycle concept and a film outlining the company’s vision for electric two-wheelers. The EV Outlier Concept won in the Design Concept category, while “What Is a Motorcycle? / Electric Motorcycles” was named a winner in Brand & Communication Design.
Key takeaways
Honda’s awards highlight both product design and the storytelling behind its electric motorcycle strategy.
- The EV Outlier Concept was recognised for its forward-looking motorcycle design.
- In-wheel motors at the front and rear enable an unconventional layout and low-slung proportions.
- Honda’s electric motorcycle brand film explores future mobility and new lifestyle possibilities.
- Both entries reflect the company’s design theme, “Precision of Intrinsic Design”.
A motorcycle designed beyond existing conventions
Honda describes the EV Outlier Concept as a vision for motorcycles beyond 2030, rather than an evolution of current models. The concept was first shown at the Japan Mobility Show 2025, where it attracted positive attention from visitors.
Its electric architecture allows designers greater freedom in positioning key components. In-wheel motors on both the front and rear wheels contribute to the model’s distinctive stance, while its low proportions create a visual departure from conventional motorcycle layouts.
Low riding position and fluid surfaces
The concept’s design is based on the idea of being “unconstrained by boundaries”. Honda has lowered the riding position substantially to give the rider a wide, engaging field of view and a stronger impression of acceleration.
Smooth surfaces and a smoke-clear bodywork treatment expose and emphasise the motorcycle’s mechanical character. Honda says the resulting appearance is intended to suggest effortless movement through the air, reinforcing the concept’s futuristic identity.
A broader vision for electric motorcycles
The second award went to Honda’s brand film, “What Is a Motorcycle? / Electric Motorcycles”. The film is built around the brand promise “Expected life. Unexpected discoveries.” Honda says this reflects its ambition to develop electric motorcycles that support everyday comfort while opening the door to new experiences.
Rather than focusing only on the vehicle itself, the film considers the wider relationship between electric mobility, people and society. It explores distinctive benefits that electric products could offer, as well as a future mobility ecosystem in which motorcycles coexist more closely with daily life.
Recognition for design and communication
Toshinobu Minami, managing director and chief operating officer of Honda R&D’s Design Center, said the company viewed the awards as recognition of its efforts to anticipate future needs and create new value ahead of its time.
Founded in 1955 and administered by Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Essen, Germany, the Red Dot Award is regarded as one of the world’s leading design competitions. Honda’s two wins give the company recognition for both a physical interpretation of its electric future and the narrative supporting that strategy.
