Yorkshire businesses under mounting strain as critical financial distress rises

Nearly 3,700 Yorkshire companies are now in critical financial distress, according to new research from financial and real estate advisory group BTG. The figures show that severe business pressures are intensifying across the region, despite a slight fall in the number of firms experiencing earlier-stage distress.

Key takeaways

  • 3,696 Yorkshire businesses were in critical financial distress at 30 June 2026.
  • Critical distress rose by 7.9% year on year, just below the UK-wide increase of 9%.
  • A further 45,645 firms were experiencing significant, or early-stage, distress.
  • Property, leisure, automotive and manufacturing businesses recorded notable increases in distress.

The figures underline the uneven impact of the current economic climate. While some sectors have seen conditions improve, thousands of companies remain exposed to higher operating costs, expensive energy and fuel, and continued uncertainty.

Critical distress continues to increase

BTG’s Red Flag Alert data recorded 3,696 Yorkshire businesses in critical financial distress by the end of June. This represents a 7.9% increase compared with the same period a year earlier.

Although the regional rise was slightly lower than the national increase, the trend remains a concern for businesses already dealing with constrained cash flow and weaker confidence. Critical distress can indicate that a company is facing serious financial difficulties and may require urgent restructuring or other support.

Early-stage pressure remains widespread

The number of Yorkshire firms experiencing significant, but less severe, financial distress fell marginally by 0.4% year on year to 45,645. This contrasts with a 1.1% increase nationally.

BTG said the small regional improvement should be viewed cautiously. Businesses may be limiting spending and holding back investment to protect cash in the short term. While that approach can provide some resilience, it may also delay decisions needed to support long-term growth.

Sector performance is mixed

Fourteen of the 22 sectors monitored in Yorkshire reported a decline in significant distress. The strongest improvements were recorded in:

  • Utilities, down 23.3%.
  • Hotels and accommodation, down 13.1%.
  • Wholesale, down 13.1%.
  • Printing and packaging, down 13%.

However, several important parts of the regional economy moved in the opposite direction. Distress rose by 9.3% in real estate and property services, while leisure and cultural activities increased by 4.8%. Automotive businesses recorded a 4.6% rise and manufacturing saw a 2.7% increase.

Businesses face difficult decisions

Julian Pitts, BTG’s Leeds-based national managing partner for restructuring, said rising costs, energy and fuel prices, and wider economic uncertainty were continuing to place pressure on Yorkshire companies.

The data suggests that businesses are responding cautiously, but postponing investment or restructuring decisions could make it harder for some firms to recover. With critical distress still rising, early action may be important for companies seeking to preserve jobs, protect cash flow and remain viable.
