Tom Trevatt Photography Description

Back at the beginning of 2020 I had just completed my PhD in Art Theory and was planning one more year of DJing (my side hustle) until commiting fully to my passion – teaching. But then that big thing happened and changed everything. It was at that moment I realised that not only had the bottom fallen out of the university education industry, but that as a man approaching 40 quickly, I had to find something outside of DJing that both fulfilled a creative desire in me and made a living. And that’s when I returned to photography. Back in my art foundation course I had specialised in photography (pre-digital, so in the darkroom and all that), but had given it up to pursue a career in art, curating, and academia. Now, I haven’t given up on all of that – I still teach at Goldsmiths university on an art programme – but out of the ashes of the dumpster fire that was 2020, I have spent the last half a decade dedicated to the craft of photography, specifically portraiture and headshot photography.

I’m motivated by the power that a great headshot can bring to your career. I love combining the artistic quality of photography with the utility of the headshot. Not only does the right headshot look like you on your best day, but it can help you achieve your dreams by getting that life changing role or even just tell your story. I want you to feel free to be you in front of the camera, to lean into what makes you unique. I won’t ask for cheesy poses or to “smile for the camera”. People respond to authenticity and that’s what I want to portray. That means I favour longer sessions – more time in the studio means more time building that connection that looks so good on camera. I don’t rush this process.

Humans love stories, they drive us, guide us and enthrall us, so headshot photography, for me, is much more than just showing a photograph that looks like you, but one that tells a unique and compelling story about who you are as a performer and as a person.

If you want to catch up with me and find out more about what drives me, I have a podcast about photography and everything else called Photography Adjacent where I interview super interesting photographers, artists, activists, writers and so on. Oh, and I’m also a keen cyclist – I have convinced myself that bikepacking is my new hobby.

I am based in London, and cover the whole of the South East.
