Finding a good printer in the UK
A local print shop does what the online printers cannot: today. Walk in with a file, have it checked by someone who knows what will look right, proof it on the counter, and collect it the same day or the next — business cards, flyers, leaflets, posters, menus, invitations, labels and stickers, banners, and the document printing, copying, scanning and binding that a small business or a student needs at short notice. The better shops also design, from a logo to a full brochure, and handle large-format work: roller banners, foamboard, canvas, vinyl and signage.
The trade runs from the high-street copy shop with digital presses to commercial printers running litho for long runs and specialists in large format, labels or garments. Digital printing is the right choice for short runs and quick turnaround; litho for thousands of copies where the unit cost matters; large-format for anything bigger than A3. A good printer will tell you which, check your artwork for resolution, bleed and colour, and warn you before printing 500 of something with a typo.

Before you order printing
- Send print-ready PDFs with 3mm bleed and images at 300dpi; if you are not sure, ask the shop to check or to set it up for you.
- Say the quantity, the size, the paper weight and finish, and single or double-sided; the price depends on all of them.
- Ask for a printed proof for anything in colour or in quantity; screens lie about colour.
- Check the turnaround and whether same-day carries a premium.
- For banners and outdoor items, ask about eyelets, hems and weatherproof inks.
- Proofread everything before approving; the shop prints what you sign off.
What printing costs in the UK
As a rough guide, 250 business cards cost £25 to £60 depending on the stock and finish, 500 A5 flyers £40 to £90, 100 A4 leaflets folded £50 to £100, an A1 poster £15 to £30, a 2-metre roller banner £50 to £90, and a 2-metre PVC banner with eyelets £40 to £80. Colour copies run 20p to 60p a side and black and white 5p to 15p, with binding £3 to £10. Same-day service adds 25 to 50 per cent at many shops, and design is charged at £30 to £60 an hour.

Ring with the quantity, size and deadline for a price; a shop that asks about your artwork before quoting is the one to use.
How much does it cost to print business cards?+

Can I get printing done the same day?+

What file do I need to send to a printer?+
A PDF at the finished size with 3mm bleed on each edge, images at 300dpi, fonts embedded and colours in CMYK. If that is not possible, send what you have — a Word file, a JPEG, a Canva export — and ask the shop to check and prepare it, which most do for a small charge.
What is the difference between digital and litho printing?+
Digital prints straight from the file with no setup, so it is cheap and fast for short runs and allows variable data; litho uses plates and is more expensive to set up but cheaper per copy for thousands, with the best colour on coated paper. A printer will choose by quantity and finish.
Can a print shop design my leaflet or logo?+
Most can, from tidying your artwork to designing from scratch, at £30 to £60 an hour or a fixed price per job. For a logo or a brochure a graphic designer may do more, but for a flyer, a menu or a banner the shop's own designer is quick and knows what prints well.
