Finding a good home furnishing shop in the UK

Home furnishing shops sell the things that dress a house: curtains, blinds and shutters ready-made and made to measure, curtain poles and tracks, fabrics by the metre and the making-up service to turn them into curtains, blinds, cushions and loose covers, upholstery and re-upholstery, bedding, throws and cushions, rugs and carpets, lighting, mirrors, pictures and wall decor, candles, vases and the ornaments and homewares that finish a room; some are department-store homeware floors and national chains, many are independent interiors shops with a curtain workroom behind them, and the blinds and shutters specialists measure and fit in your home.

The value of a local shop is the service: a home visit to measure and advise, samples to see in your own light, made-to-measure curtains and blinds that fit the window rather than nearly fit it, fitting by people who do it every day, and a workroom that will alter, reline or re-make what you already have. Made to measure costs more than ready-made and lasts longer, so it is worth it on the windows you see every day; for the rest, ready-made in standard sizes does the job. Look for a shop with a workroom or a trusted maker, a fitter on the books, fabric books from the main houses, and a clear quote covering fabric, making, lining, poles and fitting; and check child-safety on blind cords, which the law now requires.

The listings here show each shop's ranges, made-to-measure and fitting services, fabrics and brands, upholstery, home visits, prices, opening hours and contact details, so you can see who is nearby, who does what you need, and where people in your town go to get the house looking finished.

What home furnishing shops offer

Curtains and blinds: ready-made and made-to-measure curtains, roller, Roman, Venetian, vertical, wooden and blackout blinds, plantation shutters, poles, tracks and tie-backs, measured and fitted at home.

Fabrics and making: fabric by the metre from the main design houses, a making-up service for curtains, blinds, cushions and loose covers, linings and interlinings, and alterations and re-lining of existing curtains.

Upholstery: re-upholstery and re-covering of sofas, chairs and headboards, foam and cushion replacement, and new sofas and chairs made in a chosen fabric.

Soft furnishings and bedding: cushions, throws, bedding and duvets, mattress toppers, table linen, towels and bathroom textiles.

Decor and homewares: rugs and runners, lighting and lampshades, mirrors, pictures and frames, clocks, candles, vases, artificial flowers, storage and the accessories and gifts that finish a room.

Before you buy curtains, blinds or soft furnishings

  • Take window measurements and photos to the shop, and for made-to-measure ask for a home visit so the shop measures and takes responsibility for the fit.
  • Take fabric samples home and look at them in daylight and lamplight against the walls and the sofa.
  • Ask what the quote includes: fabric, making, lining, heading, pole or track, fitting and VAT.
  • Decide lined, interlined or blackout; lining adds drape, insulation and life to curtains.
  • Check blinds and curtains with cords meet child-safety rules and come with the safety devices fitted.
  • For re-upholstery, get a quote on the sofa itself; a good frame is worth re-covering, a cheap one is not.

What home furnishings cost in the UK

As a rough guide, ready-made curtains cost £30 to £150 a pair, made-to-measure lined curtains £150 to £400 a pair for a standard window in a mid-range fabric and £400 to £1,200 for a large window in a designer fabric, with making at £60 to £150 a pair plus fabric at £15 to £80 a metre; a made-to-measure roller blind £60 to £150, a Roman blind £120 to £350, a wooden Venetian £80 to £250, vertical blinds £60 to £150 and plantation shutters £250 to £500 a square metre fitted; a curtain pole £30 to £150 and fitting £40 to £80 a window; re-upholstering a two-seat sofa £600 to £1,500 plus fabric and an armchair £350 to £800; cushions £15 to £60, a throw £25 to £120, a large rug £100 to £600, and a lamp £30 to £200. Home measuring visits are usually free against an order.

Made-to-measure curtains at £300 in the living room last fifteen years; the £60 ready-mades that stop three inches short get replaced twice in that time.

How do I find a home furnishing shop near me?+

Look at the home furnishing shops listed for your town, which show their ranges, made-to-measure and fitting services, fabrics and brands, upholstery, home visits, prices, hours and reviews; for curtains and blinds choose a shop that measures and fits at home and has its own workroom or maker, and take samples home before deciding.

How much do made-to-measure curtains cost?+

Typically £150 to £400 a pair for a standard window in a mid-range fabric, lined and made, and £400 to £1,200 for a large window or a designer fabric, made up of fabric at £15 to £80 a metre, making at £60 to £150 a pair and lining; poles, tracks and fitting are extra at £70 to £230 a window. Ready-made curtains are £30 to £150 a pair where a standard size fits.

Which blinds are best for which room?+

Blackout roller or Roman blinds for bedrooms and nurseries, moisture-resistant roller, faux-wood Venetian or aluminium blinds for bathrooms and kitchens, wooden Venetians and shutters for living rooms and street-facing windows, vertical blinds for large windows and patio doors, and Roman blinds in fabric to match curtains anywhere you want softness; day-and-night blinds give privacy with light. A shop that measures at home will advise on the fit inside or outside the recess.

Is it worth re-upholstering a sofa?+

If the frame is solid hardwood and the sofa is a quality or a much-loved piece, yes: re-upholstery at £600 to £1,500 plus fabric gives a better sofa than a new one at the same price, with new foam and springs and a fabric of your choice; a cheap sofa with a softwood frame is not worth it. Ask the upholsterer to look at the frame first, and get a quote that includes fabric, foam and collection.

Do blinds have to be child-safe?+

Yes: since 2014 all new blinds with cords or chains sold in the UK must meet the child-safety standard, with cord tensioners, cleats or breakaway devices supplied and fitted, and installers must fit them; cordless and motorised blinds remove the risk entirely and are the safest choice in children's rooms. A reputable shop fits the safety devices as standard and will retrofit them to older blinds.

Will the shop measure and fit at home?+

Most independent curtain and blind shops and the specialist blinds and shutters companies offer a free home visit to measure, advise and show samples, and their own fitter to install, with fitting charged per window or included in made-to-measure orders; measuring at home means the shop is responsible for the fit. Department stores and chains often offer the same through a partner service.
