Finding a kitchen fitter in the UK
Most kitchens in the UK are now bought supply-only, from IKEA, Howdens, Wren, B&Q or a local showroom, and fitted by an independent kitchen fitter, which is usually cheaper and often better than the retailer's own installation service. A good fitter does far more than hang cabinets: they set out the room so the units run true on floors and walls that never are, cut and fit worktops, plumb the sink and dishwasher, fit the appliances, and coordinate the electrician, gas engineer, tiler and plasterer so each arrives when the job is ready for them.
The fitter's skill shows in the details that last: units level and scribed to the wall, doors aligned, worktop joints tight and sealed, the sink cut-out sealed against water, cornice and plinths mitred cleanly. It also shows in what they will not do. Gas hobs need a Gas Safe engineer; new circuits and sockets need a registered electrician; a stone worktop is templated and fitted by the supplier. A fitter who explains that sequence is one who has done it many times.
There is no licence for kitchen fitters, so reviews with photos, a written quote that says exactly what is included, and a clear programme are the things to look for. The listings here show each fitter's reviews, opening hours and contact details, so you can compare who is nearby and whose kitchens local people are happy with.
What a kitchen fitter does
Fitting: stripping out the old kitchen, setting out and levelling the new units, fitting doors, drawers and handles, cutting and fitting laminate or solid timber worktops, sinks and taps, cornice, pelmet and plinths.
Plumbing and appliances: connecting the sink, dishwasher and washing machine, fitting integrated appliances, extractor hoods and ducting, and cooker hoods and splashbacks.
Coordination: bringing in a registered electrician for new sockets and circuits, a Gas Safe engineer for a gas hob, a tiler and a plasterer, and arranging templating for stone or quartz worktops after the units are in.
Before you book a kitchen fitter
- Give the fitter the kitchen plan and the delivery list before they quote, and ask them to check the design fits the room; a good fitter spots problems the retailer's planner missed.
- Get a written quote that says what is included, from strip-out and waste to plumbing, electrics, tiling and worktops, and what is priced separately.
- Ask who does the electrics and gas, and confirm the electrician is scheme-registered and the gas engineer is Gas Safe.
- Look at photos of recent kitchens and read reviews that mention the finish, tidiness and whether the programme held.
- Have the whole kitchen delivered and checked before work starts; a missing unit stops the job.
- Agree staged payments and confirm public liability insurance.
What kitchen fitting costs in the UK
As a rough guide, fitting an average kitchen of ten to fifteen units costs somewhere between £1,500 and £4,000 in labour, depending on the region and how much plumbing, electrical and tiling work comes with it. Fitters charge either a day rate in the £200 to £300 range or a fixed price for the job. Worktops are priced separately: laminate is fitted by the kitchen fitter; quartz and granite are templated and fitted by the stone supplier at a few hundred pounds per linear metre.
Moving the sink or the cooker, new flooring, plastering and a full rewire all add to the labour, so compare itemised quotes on the same plan rather than headline figures.
How do I find a good kitchen fitter near me?+
Start with the kitchen fitters listed for your town, look at photos of recent kitchens and read reviews that describe the whole job. Send two or three your kitchen plan and ask for an itemised quote. The fitter who queries something on the plan before quoting is usually the one who will fit it well.
How much does it cost to fit a kitchen?+
Labour for an average kitchen usually falls between £1,500 and £4,000, depending on the size, the region and how much plumbing, electrical work and tiling is involved. That is on top of the kitchen itself and the worktops. A like-for-like replacement in the same layout is at the lower end; moving services and adding an island push it up.
Can a kitchen fitter install an IKEA kitchen?+
Yes, and many specialise in it. IKEA and other flat-pack kitchens take longer to fit because every unit is assembled on site, so expect a day or two more than a pre-built kitchen. Give the fitter the IKEA plan and the full delivery list, and have everything delivered and checked before the start date.
How long does it take to fit a kitchen?+
A straightforward replacement in the same layout takes three to five days; a larger kitchen with new plumbing, electrics, plastering and tiling takes one to two weeks. Stone worktops add a wait, because they are templated after the units are fitted and installed a week or two later, so plan for a temporary worktop in between.
Who fits the worktops?+
Laminate and solid timber worktops are cut and fitted by the kitchen fitter. Quartz, granite and other stone worktops are templated by the stone supplier once the base units are in, cut in their workshop and fitted by their own team, usually a week or two later. Ask your fitter to coordinate the templating date as part of the job.
Does a kitchen fitter do the electrics and gas?+
Not unless they are registered to. New sockets, circuits and cooker connections must be done or certified by an electrician registered with a competent person scheme, and a gas hob or cooker must be connected by a Gas Safe engineer. Most fitters work with both and will build them into the programme and the quote; make sure the certificates are included.
