Chuckling Cheese Company Closes Middlesbrough Store Amid Declining Footfall

Middlesbrough, UK 1 min read Business News Delicatessens

The Chuckling Cheese Company is closing its Middlesbrough shop on 12 April 2025, alongside its Doncaster store, citing a sharp fall in footfall and rising operating costs. The family-run business, which started in Skegness in 2015, opened the Middlesbrough branch in 2018 in the Hill Street Shopping Centre, its third outlet, selling artisan cheeses, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, chutneys and even wedding cakes.

The company said footfall had fallen sharply since M&S left the shopping centre, and that rising costs had made it unsustainable to keep both stores open. The news prompted a wave of tributes from customers on social media, with one writing, “Aw no, I loved the cheese from here,” and another saying, “Sad to see this. Many happy memories of working in the Boro store. My love to the staff affected.”

The Chuckling Cheese Company thanked customers for years of support and confirmed its online shop will continue trading, alongside its remaining stores at Skegness and the MetroCentre, as first reported by Teesside Live.
