Manchester-founded vintage fashion retailer Joanie Clothing has closed after nine years of trading, with the company’s directors announcing what they called “the final chapter” on social media. Founded in 2016 by Lucy Gledhill and named after her great aunt Joanie, the brand built a large online following for its vintage-inspired collections, extensive size range and “slow fashion” ethos of buying less and prioritising quality.
The directors said Brexit, the Covid-19 pandemic, economic uncertainty and new international tariffs had combined to take a heavy toll on the business, which could no longer sustain its operations despite efforts to adapt. FRP Advisory’s Alastair Massey and Phil Armstrong were appointed Joint Administrators on 20 January 2026, with the closure costing 13 jobs. The Joanie website remains online but is no longer taking orders, with customer queries directed to FRP Advisory.
Over its nine years, Joanie built a following worldwide and forged collaborations with American actress Christina Hendricks and Manchester-born designer Celia Birtwell, as well as a collection inspired by Coronation Street that celebrated its Manchester roots. The directors thanked their team, freelancers, suppliers and partners, along with the “Joanie Gals” who had supported the brand, saying they were proud to have helped customers “look and feel the best version of you.”
As of September 2026, no buyer has come forward and the Joanie brand has not resurfaced under new ownership — the administrators’ priority remains supporting the affected staff and realising what value they can for creditors.
