Near & Fair is an independent fair trade gift shop inside Trinity Market in Hull's Old Town. Its owners spent several years selling at craft fairs and markets before taking a permanent unit in the market in January 2018, and the shop has since grown from a sparsely stocked stall into one packed with ethically made goods.
It is a member of BAFTS, the British Association for Fair Trade Shops and Suppliers, so its stock comes through audited supply chains that pay the makers, many of them artisans in Nepal and India, fairly. Shelves of rustic crates hold carved wooden animals, Buddha figures, salt lamps, lanterns, prayer flags, dreamcatchers and wind chimes, alongside incense, crystals, candles and wax melts, jewellery, bags and purses, clothing and knitwear, greeting cards, natural soaps and fair trade chocolate, tea and coffee.
The full range can also be ordered online. The shop is open Monday to Saturday from half past nine until four.
