The Fan Museum Museums in Greenwich, London
About
The Fan Museum is a small independent museum in the heart of Greenwich's World Heritage Site, given over entirely to the history, culture and craft of the hand fan. Founded by Hélène Alexander and her husband, it has been open to the public since 1991 and is accredited by Arts Council England, with a collection spanning more than a thousand years of fan making.
It occupies two restored Grade II* listed Georgian townhouses on Crooms Hill, a short walk from Greenwich station and Cutty Sark DLR. Alongside the permanent displays it runs a changing exhibition programme, hands-on fan making workshops and guided group visits, and its orangery can be hired for private occasions. The museum shop sells fans, books and gifts.
Admission is modest, with free entry for under-sevens, and it opens Tuesday to Saturday with last admission half an hour before closing.
