About

Hoxton Hall is a historic music hall on Hoxton Street that now runs as a charity arts venue, a few minutes' walk from Hoxton Overground station. Its galleried main hall, with ironwork balconies wrapped around a small stage, hosts a year-round programme of theatre, live music, comedy, dance and cabaret, along with seasonal shows at Christmas.

Alongside the performances the building is busy with community work: free youth arts courses and workshops for young people, creative health projects, the Strictly Hoxton dance sessions and activities for people over 55. The listed building can also be hired for performances, conferences, meetings and filming, is licensed for weddings and civil ceremonies, and lets affordable office space to creative businesses and charities.

For shows the bar opens an hour before curtain up, and during the day the building is open to visitors from Monday to Saturday.

A Grade II* Victorian music hall

Hoxton Hall was built in 1863 as MacDonald's Music Hall to a design by architect James Mortimer, and is now Grade II* listed. Its galleried auditorium, wrapped on three sides on cast iron columns above a small, high stage, survives largely in its original Victorian form.

From temperance mission to community charity

After the original music hall lost its performance licence in the 1870s, biscuit-family heir William Isaac Palmer bought the building in 1879 for the Blue Ribbon Gospel Temperance Mission. It was later used for many years as a Quaker meeting house, which helped preserve the hall before it passed into charitable hands as the community arts venue it is today.
