From Carmelite monastery to stately home
Hitchin Priory began life in the 14th century as a Carmelite monastery. When the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th century ended its religious life, the building was repurposed as a stately residence, and over the centuries its halls hosted kings, nobles and other notable visitors.
A hotel since the 20th century
In the 20th century the priory was reimagined as a hotel, blending its historic architecture and monastic origins with modern hospitality, and it continues today as a wedding and events venue as well as a place to stay.
