Opened beneath St George's Church by Revd Don Robins in 1930
The Crypt was opened in 1930, during the Depression, by Revd Don Robins, the newly arrived vicar of St George's Church. With members of the congregation he cleared out a crypt full of vaults, coffins and dust, and the first £3 ever raised was spent on canvas to cover the coffins and the holes in the walls. In the Second World War the night shelter became an air raid shelter.
Faith Lodge in 1954 and charity status in 1967
In July 1954 the Crypt opened Faith Lodge, a half-way house giving men time to rebuild their lives before settling back into society. St George's Crypt became a registered charity in February 1967.
Rebuilt and rededicated in 1999
Following the 'More than a roof' capital appeal launched in 1995, the Crypt was rebuilt between May 1998 and July 1999 to bring its facilities up to date, and was rededicated on 14 September 1999 at a service led by the Archbishop of York.
