One of Britain's oldest supermarket chains
Sainsbury's traces back to 1869, when John James and Mary Ann Sainsbury opened a dairy shop at 173 Drury Lane in Covent Garden, London, selling just eggs, milk and butter. The business grew into the UK's largest grocer by 1922 and floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1973, then the largest flotation in the exchange's history. This Streatham High Road store continues that line as a full-range superstore serving the local area.
