From a German corner shop to a global discounter
Aldi traces back to 1946, when brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht took over their mother's grocery store in Essen, Germany, which had traded since 1913. By 1960 the brothers had built the business into around 300 shops, adopting the Aldi name — short for Albrecht Diskont — in 1962.
Over three decades on the British high street
Aldi opened its first UK store in Stechford, Birmingham, in 1990, and expanded steadily through the 1990s to become one of the country's best-known discount supermarket chains, now part of a global group trading in 18 countries.
