The Waiting Room Cafes & Coffee Shops in Sandwich
About
The Waiting Room is a family-run café bar in the centre of Sandwich, housed in the small timbered building on the Cattle Market that opened in 1922 as the waiting room of the East Kent Road Car Company. The Waite family restored it and reopened it exactly a century later, keeping the original quarry tiles, doors and 1922 bench seating, now re-covered in handmade leather, and hanging 22 lights as a nod to its first year.
Days begin early with coffee made from the café's own TWR22 house blend, croissants and pastries, and bacon or sausage ciabattas. Through the day there are freshly made sandwiches and bagels, Kent crisps, a changing selection of homemade cakes and afternoon tea, with local produce used where possible. In the evening it turns into a cosy bar serving cocktails, wine, champagne, Peroni and Meantime on tap, sharing boards and hot plates.
It hosts live music, wine and spirit tastings, cocktail masterclasses and classic movie nights in the darker months, and the whole venue can be hired for private events with no hire fee. Tables spill out onto the pavement under parasols in good weather.
