From a single Dublin shop to the high street
Primark began in 1969 as Penneys, a single shop on Mary Street in Dublin opened by Arthur Ryan for the Weston family's Associated British Foods. Its low-price, high-street fashion model took off quickly, and shops crossed to Britain in the early 1970s, rebranding as Primark after a naming clash with the American retailer JC Penney. The Wakefield branch is part of that same national chain, carrying the full range of womenswear, menswear, kidswear and homeware the brand is known for.
