From a single Seattle store to the UK
Starbucks opened its first store in Seattle's Pike Place Market in 1971, founded by three university friends who named the business after the first mate in Moby Dick. It entered the UK market in 1998 by acquiring the 56-outlet Seattle Coffee Company and rebranding its stores as Starbucks, the start of the chain's growth across Britain that this drive-thru is part of today.
