Tayyabs Restaurants in Tower Hamlets, London

About
Tayyabs is a family-owned Punjabi restaurant on Fieldgate Street in Whitechapel, founded in 1972 and still run by the same family more than fifty years on. It is one of the East End's best-known places to eat, a bustling dining room behind a blue neon sign. The kitchen cooks traditional Punjabi food, and the sizzling lamb chops are the dish most people come for, alongside the mixed grill, tandoori chicken, dry meat, chicken karahi, karahi tarka dhal, freshly baked naan and kebabs from the grill.
The restaurant is bring-your-own-bottle, which keeps a big group dinner affordable, and tables can be booked in advance. For those who would rather eat at home, the same dishes are available for delivery, and the restaurant also sells its own merchandise online. It is open every day of the week from noon until 11.30pm.

A pub building turned Punjabi institution
Tayyabs occupies the Fieldgate Street site of the former Queen's Head public house, built in 1885-6, and is run by three brothers from the Tayyab family who have kept the restaurant in the same hands since it opened in 1972. Time Out has featured the restaurant every year since its opening, and has described it as holding near-mythical status among Londoners for its lamb chops and Punjabi cooking.
