Rooted in the Rochdale Pioneers of 1844
The Co-op traces its origins to the Rochdale Pioneers, a group of workers who opened a co-operative shop at 31 Toad Lane, Rochdale, on 21 December 1844, selling basic goods and returning a share of the profits to its customer-members. That same principle, of rewards shared with members, continues today through the Co-op's membership scheme, available at this Welwyn Garden City store alongside its bakery, food-to-go and off-licence counters.
