Company history

From a Leeds tailor to the high street

Next traces back to Joseph Hepworth & Son, a Leeds tailor founded in 1864 that grew into one of Britain's first chain-store retailers. After buying womenswear retailer Kendall & Sons in 1981, the company launched the Next format in 1982, converting its Hepworth shops and becoming Next plc in 1986. It's now the UK's largest clothing retailer, with the Yate branch stocking the full women's, men's, children's and Next Home ranges.
